With a colorful, free-form staircase

Charleston, South Carolina, is known for its well-preserved historic architecture, a melange of Colonial, Revival, Victorian, and Italianate styles. And while we love a historic home, today’s bright and airy listing is a breath of fresh air.

The three-bedroom, three-bath home is the brainchild of Kevan Hoertdoerfer, an award-winning architect known for provocative contemporary design. The open and light-filled floorplan feels a bit like a contemporary art gallery, with 25-foot ceilings and carefully landscaped outdoor spaces. But the 2,350-square-foot home has neighbors on both sides restricting the view, so Hoertdoerfer used translucent panels instead of windows to let in light.

The focal point of the living areas is a show-stopping free-form staircase doubles that as a work of art, its bright colors contrasting with the white walls. The custom touch continues throughout the home; a local woodworker built the sculptural solid oak kitchen island and cabinetry, as well as the bathroom cabinetry, custom closet design, and bedroom built ins.

Two bedrooms are located downstairs while the entire second floor makes up the loft-like master, including a private deck that overlooks Charleston’s nearby Hampton Park. And as if that picturesque outdoor space wasn’t enough, the backyard features a cabana framed by giant timber bamboo with plenty of space for lounging. Love what you see? 116 Grove Street is on the market now for $1,295,000.
